CHIP COMMINCATIONS COMPANY CSR's CSR101 technology has been used to create a multi-payment card that lets people make credit and debit card payments on a variety of cards with just a smartphone's Bluetooth connection.
The All-in-One Smart Card was created in partnership with software and hardware firm BrilliantTS, and is designed to reduce the number of cards in a wallet as it can register over 30 of them.
CSR's 1013 chip is just 0.35mm thick, making it the thinnest Bluetooth 4.1 system on a chip (SoC) available in a 2.4x2.6mm Wafer Level Chip Scale Package.
BrilliantTS took advantage of the small footprint and low power consumption to develop the smartcard, which is the same size as a standard Europay, MasterCard or Visa card, making it compatible with existing PoS and ATM systems.
The smartcard can register credit and debit as well as support public transport travel, magnetic and NFC, one-time password and applications such as security door keys.
"Alongside the CSR1013 ultra-thin package, the Bluetooth solution also offers low power consumption, 128KB memory and low external bill of materials," said CSR.
"This makes the SoC ideal for next-generation payment and security cards and a wide variety of other smart devices such as sports equipment and wearables, and is priced to enable devices at all levels of the price scale."
The idea is to give customers an easier and simpler way to carry multiple cards. The Qualcomm-owned CSR and BrilliantTS said that the idea sprouted from wanting to make this all-in-one card thinner and improve the overall consumer experience.
"To make this possible we needed to develop a card which was the same size as a standard EMV card and did not need to be constantly charged. CSR1013 helped us to achieve this with the built-in security that Bluetooth Smart provides," said BrilliantTS CEO Jaehun Bae.
The 1013 CSP is part of the proven line of CSR μEnergy single-mode Bluetooth low-energy platforms, and is said to increase application code and data space for greater flexibility in application development.
An example design is available now, CSR said, adding that it will produce modules that can be used with the existing CSR101x development kits. µ
